Animal Farm – sponsored by Mt Ommaney Centre

We wish to thank Mt Ommaney Centre for their generous sponsorship of the animal farm which means everyone is able to enter the farm for free.

The farm animals give the children and families an up-close personal experience with lambs, piglets, baby goats, ducks, chickens and baby chicks, guinea pigs and even a calf.
The children can hold and pat, hand and bottle feed these precious little animals. It will certainly create happy memories and photos of their time at the animal farm at the ‘Centenary Rocks!’ festival.

Sand Sculpting

Sand sculpture is a rare and intricate art form that takes sand and water and breaths it to life with seemingly impossible beauty. For many people seeing a sand sculpture for the first time is a memorable experience.
This is a rare art form practiced only by a handful of individuals worldwide.
We are lucky to present artist Steve Machell who will be creating a sculpture at this year’s festival and holding workshops so you can all learn ‘how to’ then practice next time at the beach.

Crowds are absolutely stunned by the detail and creativity of our sand sculptures. The most common questions asked are “How can you do that?” and “Is it just sand?” Yes it is just sand and a lifetime of skill and experience.

Steve grew up in Brisbane but at the age of 19 the magnetic pull of the ocean became too strong to resist. He left Brisbane and his studies in Information Technology and decided to travel around Australia. It was a few years later that he discovered sand sculpting.

“It all started on St Kilda beach, Melbourne. One of my traveling buddies Rick had seen some sand sculptures on the Canary Islands. So Rick, myself and another friend Ben decided to give it a go.
I think I found it, I was hooked. My traveling buddies soon moved on, but immediately I felt I had found my calling. I stuck at it and through trial and error evolved my own unique style.”

After a couple of years traveling to different beaches, Byron Bay became Steve’s home base. He’s become a tourist attraction in the area receiving local, national and international media attention. On a sunny day you’ll be likely to find Steve down on main beach in Byron, molding the sand into magic. At sunset he lights the sculpture with candles which really brings his creations to life.

One of Steve’s Dreams is to build a life size castle…
